MORE ON ELICO’s FINISHED LEATHER

The finished dress and sports gloving leather is produced from Ethiopian highland hair sheepskins, which are traditionally known as “Abyssinian” or in short “Abyss”. “Abyss” are known for its high quality grain and compact fiber structure to be shaved down to the lowest possible thickness without loosing their tear and tensile strength.

ELICO – Gloving and Hide Unit is a highly specialized tannery with over 50 years of experience in the processing and export of Ethiopian hair sheepskins for leather gloves and garment producers throughout the world. It produces ladies’ and men’s dress gloving leathers in the traditional black and brown as well as trendy pastel colors. It also produces one of the finest golf gloving leather in silver and snow white colors which have gained great popularity among world famous sports gloves producers.

Other lines of leather production in the tannery include fully finished leathers for garment and shoes made from the “Abyss”. Shoe upper leathers made from Ethiopian hair sheepskins seem to have no match with their superiority in quality with regard to fineness, tightness and grain structure.

In order to adhere to these objectives, the company heavily invests in training of its staff in quality management and control.

The company’s raw materials and finished products are fully inspected and controlled during processing. The motto is “to do it right first time”.

Finished products pass rigorous tests before they are sent to customers. ELICO-Gloving and Hide Unit has well equipped leather testing laboratory to test:

• Physical Characteristics of leather,
• Chemical Characteristics and content in leather,
• Active substances in chemical products,
• Quality of input water,
• Inter-operation process variables,
• Quality of effluent, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND CLEANER PRODUCTION:

ELICO is committed to environmental compliance. Priority is being given to protect the environment by avoiding the excretion of hazardous liquids, gases and solids into the environment. This strategy is being carried out in two ways.

1. By using cleaner production methods
2. By using effluent treatment plant.

Cleaner production is found to be an effective and sensible way of reducing or even avoiding pollution in the most economical way. ELICO is training its workers in good house keeping and in the use of appropriate technologies, which minimize waste and pollution.

ELICO has installed a modern effluent treatment plant also at ELICO - Gloving and Hide Unit. This plant has a chrome recovery unit. Recovered chrome is recycled into the production process.
