ELICO – Gloving and Hide Unit is the leading tannery in Ethiopia and even in Africa to produce the finest glove leather that meets the requirements of the international market.
It is also one of the fewest to have efficient chrome
recovery unit and treatment plant. To reduce the impact on the environment the company’s management is committed to manage environmental matters as an integral part of its business. Environmental care is ELICO-Gloving
and Hide Unit's core value. The tannery is to be ranked as a leader in terms of environmental care among the Tanneries in the country. The environmental commitment is realized by developing an environmental policy being adhered to the following four principles.
Compliance
We commit ourselves to comply with environmental laws and regulations and other requirements to which the organization subscribes by implementing ISO 14001:
2004. In our effort to manage environmental matters compliance plays a significant role as a key ingredient in the training, performance reviews and incentives of all our employees.
Risk reduction, prevention and Resource management
We are committed to continually seek opportunities for preventing and reducing risk to employees, communities and the environment by employing clean technology and other safe technologies.
We commit to minimize the release of waste to air, land or water by:
- Managing scarce resources such as water, energy and land in an environmentally
sensitive manner.
- Minimizing the amount and toxicity of water
generated through safe treatment and disposal of waste.
- Using renewable or recyclable materials and components wherever possible in operation.
- ELICO Gloving and Hide Unit encourages
efficient utilization of resources and minimization of
wastes by the application of BAT and clean technology.

efficient energy management system to all its activities.
Communication

environmental commitment and its results shall be communicated
to all its employee, customers and public at planned intervals
to ensure that their interests have been met.
Continuous Improvement
Our environmental activities shall be integrated in all our operations and shall be improved by:
- Formulating, communicating and monitoring clearly defined goals,
- Involving all employees, and
- Establishing good relationship with
national/ international organizations that have concern for environment.
We also review the progress made towards meeting set objectives and targets at planned intervals and periodically report to our stakeholders.
Each functional head of the Factory and the EMS teams are responsible for implementing action programmes based on this policy.
