ELICO – was established twenty years
ago by the Ethiopian government with the objective of producing
value-added products and creating job opportunity for employees.
1984
The Ethiopian government established the Factory with a techno-commercial
partnership with the Hungarian government.
The Hungarians took the responsibility of
erecting the Factory and training of the required manpower.
1987
When the agreement with Hungarian government came to an end,
a South Korean company replaced them as techno-commercial partner
of the Factory. During this time, the Factory was able to
export leather garments to Europe and North America.
The Koreans eventually setup their own garment
Factory in Ethiopia and terminated their partnership with
the Factory.
As far as the local leather garments and leather articles
market is concerned, the Factory is a trendsetter.
1997
Following a change in government and the subsequent liberalization
of the economy, Universal Leather Articles Factory was privatized
and came under Ethio-Leather Industry PLC (ELICO).
The name of the factory was changed to ELICO
– Universal Leather Articles Factory.
Since the takeover, ELICO has pursued a
strategy of taking the Factory back in to the export market.
The result obtained, however, is not as expected. To this
end, ELICO would very much welcome a techno-commercial partner
that would promote the products of the Factory, especially,
in the export market.
The techno-commercial partner who is willing to work with
ELICO by introducing its market connection and production
know-how may come forward without any capital requirement
on its side (ELICO is ready to bear any capital and raw material
requirement for the said venture);
The partner, however, would be entitled for an agreed commission
or share of revenue, which shall be agreed in detail.
Features of the Factory:
- Versatile production machinery,
- Skilled and trainable workforce,
- Enjoys in house leather supply
per requirement,
- Unutilized production capacity
in the form of machinery and support facility
- Convenient production premises,
and
- Industrial peace.
